Last summer, a mysterious headset at E3 called Oculus Rift wowed press and developers alike. Within weeks, the home-made 3D prototype had turned into one of the biggest Kickstarter projects of all time, raising over £1.5m to fund a new kind of VR headset: light, affordable and ultra-high tech. Stuff headed out to Oculus HQ in Orange County, California to find out whether the Rift can deliver the truly immersive fragfest gamers are howling for. Oculus Rift – first impressions – We test the Oculus Rift on a MacBook Pro running Doom 3 and a newer, more advanced game engine that Oculus asks me not to identify (they’re still in commercial discussions).
Despite how limited the console’s audio features are, Tritton has done an admirable job making the Kunai sound pretty fantastic. The appearance is similar to a slimmed-down version of the more feature-rich models we’ve recently looked at, but given that you can disconnect the microphone and take the Kunai with you for an MP3 player, this is most certainly a good thing. The Kunai features the same glossy sheen of the AX Pro 5.1+ and 720+. This model comes in three colors. I received the white with black accent, but there are also black and red versions. The white does a better job of hiding fingerprints than the black glossy Wii U with which I use it. The Kunai is very lightweight, which is a boon considering the padding is fairly minimal. The model is lighter than many others from the manufacturer, but that’s to be expected. The headset is only responsible for stereo sound, sporting 40mm drivers, with the easily accessible inline volume control taking everything out of the part of the unit that sits on the head.
Visual Entertainment – While DJs are known predominantly for their auditory entertainment capabilities, many can also provide visual entertainment. Using LED lighting systems, disco balls, etc., a DJ can create a colorful visual experience that not only correlates to the music, but enhances overall enjoyment for your guests no matter if they choose to dance or prefer to watch the spectacle unfold from the sidelines. I was surprised by how well the sound is handled by the Wii U Gamepad’s headset port. While I would be surprised if we ever get a surround sound product on the console, the quality of the stereo sound is impressive. The Kunai features a full range without ever sounding fuzzy or distant. I was impressed by the bass output and the clarity of the higher end of the range. There’s not a whole lot to say about the sound. This headset is a no-frills model that doesn’t feature many of the more common assets. There is no selective voice monitoring, likely because there is no distinction between chat and game audio channels. There are no presets or equalizer settings. This is simply a well-built, strong sounding stereo headset that has been licensed by Nintendo for use with their new console.
